ποΈ LOCAL NEWS
π MVRPC Unveils Climate Action Plan Draft
Back in September, we shared the news that the Miami Valley Regional Planning Commission (MVRPC) had secured an EPA grant to develop a climate action plan for the Dayton-Kettering Metro Area. Last Thursday, January 11th, they revealed their draft.
Their first step was to take inventory of our region's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, focusing on Montgomery, Greene, and Miami counties.
Their findings? In 2021, 11 million metric tons of GHG were emitted. Of those, 47% came from the residential sector, with the commercial/institutional sector contributing 29%, and the industrial sector accounting for 24%.
Across all sectors, the two biggest sources of emissions were electricity (43%) and transportation (28%). Thatβs why many of their nine proposed solutions aim to decarbonize transportation and electricity.
This includes electrifying regional parks' fleets, developing a distributed network of renewable energy sources, and making buildings more energy efficient.
What's next? The commission is holding a virtual public meeting to discuss this plan on February 1st. They're also accepting public comments through February 9th. Then, they'll be submitting their final plan to the EPA on March 1st. [WYSO]
π A New Deal For WSUβs Faculty
This week, Wright State University's faculty union approved a new three-year contract. In it, they secured a 3% salary increase for professors. This finalized contract will be effective until June 2026.
Their previous contract expired in June 2023, and negotiations for the new one began last January. Union leaders shared that while the talks were friendly, they took longer than anticipated. Of the union's members, 269 out of 289 voted in favor of the new deal.
Key changes in the contract include a requirement for professors to hold at least four office hours per week, submit midterm grades, and undergo reviews if consistently receiving low evaluations. Sabbatical policies have been adjusted, and improved rates have been set for summer classes.
The deal has also set up a way for WSU to develop self-paced online courses. The professor must sign an agreement and will be paid $2,000 for each course. This makes sense given how online learning exploded through the pandemic.
WSU has gone through some rocky periods recently, but it looks like they're moving in the right direction. Enrollment is up, and their finances are looking better. As an important part of our community, it's great to see this progress. [Dayton Daily News]
π΄ A Flavorful Week Ahead For The Miami Valley
Next week is Winter Restaurant Week in the Miami Valley! From January 21-28, 27 local restaurants will be serving special dishes ranging from $20-$60.
This promotion is organized by the Miami Valley Restaurant Association. For over 10 years they've been putting this on to help local restaurants in the post-holiday slump.
Participating restaurants this year include Greek Street, Chappy's Social House, Salar, and Pasha Grill. Check out the full list of restaurants here and their Restaurant Week menus here (not all menus have been submitted yet).
And here's some food for thought: for every meal sold, one dollar goes to the Dayton Food Bank. So, not only do you get to enjoy some great food, but you also help a great cause! [Dayton Daily News]
